Swansea City support safe standing approach

December 2012. Swansea City have become the latest Premier League club to formally back the call for safe standing trials. Having previously indicated his support at two recent Swans Trust events, club chairman Huw Jenkins has now confirmed the club's interest in seeing safe standing looked at by the authorities.

Mr Jenkins said:

We would be happy to work with the relevant bodies to look at whether this is something that could be implemented by Swansea City. It would require consultation through our fans (through the Supporters' Trust) but we are happy to support the overall approach and are happy to work to see if this is something that could be trialled at our stadium.”

Swansea City’s support comes after last week’s Parliamentary showcase The Case for Safe Standing in Football. The event was attended by MPs, journalists and football industry figures including Dai Little, a representative from the Swans Trust, 21% shareholders in Swansea City. He asked an interesting question at the event as to whether sports ground safety is, or perhaps ought to be, a power devolved from Westminster to the Welsh Assembly - even more pertinent now that both Premier/Football League clubs in Wales have declared their interest in safe standing (Cardiff City having done so a few weeks ago). Dai's question can be viewed here:

We will watch developments on the 'devolved power' issue with interest - as no doubt will other sports ground owners in Wales.
