SPL gives green light to safe standing trials

December 2011. The SPL provided a major boost for the safe standing campaign in the week before Christmas when it announced that it was happy to receive requests from member clubs to pilot safe standing areas in their stadia.

Commenting, chief executive Neil Doncaster said he was happy to be able to respond to fans' wishes:

"Since I joined the SPL in 2009, there has been widespread support amongst fans to re-introduce safe standing areas. I am delighted that we have been able to respond positively to supporters’ views on improving the match day experience."

Doncaster further made it clear that this move in no way marked a return to old-fashioned terraces and that the form of safe standing he had in mind was 'rail seats'. The news caused a wave of press coverage, much of which can be read via the links in our Press section.
